Intention for today's episode:-
- The Difference Between Functioning Well and Being Well
- Lilian opens by highlighting that a capable nervous system is not necessarily a peaceful one, emphasizing the gap between outward ability and inner wellness.
- Many high-functioning women experience a discrepancy between their external achievements and their internal state of being.
- Profile of the Over-Functioning Woman
- Describes a certain type of woman: highly competent, relied upon by others, attentive, and effective—often the “steady one” in families or workplaces.
- Her competence becomes her identity and is celebrated by others but masks deeper personal struggles.
- Internally, she feels distant from herself, experiences chronic tiredness, and often cannot articulate what is wrong, even when she “has everything she wanted.”
- Origins of Over-Functioning as a Survival Mechanism
- Over-functioning commonly develops in family environments where a child must manage chaos or others’ emotions, learning that her value lies in what she does for others.
- This behavior is rewarded and carried into adulthood, reinforced by ongoing recognition, promotion, and dependence from others.
- The cost is the suppression of her own emotional life: feelings do not disappear but are pushed into the background, accumulating until they surface unexpectedly.
- Sovereignty and Its Meaning
- “Sovereignty” in Lilian's use is not about power over others or relentless self-sufficiency but about being at home within oneself—knowing and acting on one's true feelings and desires.
- It is internal authorship: living from personal authenticity, not as a response to external demands.
- Many competent women are not sovereign; their achievements can represent refined forms of self-abandonment.
- Transitioning Beyond Over-Functioning
- The limits of the over-functioning strategy: it can bring success but ultimately leads to self-disconnection.
- Moving forward requires contact with oneself, not dismantling competence, but integrating inner awareness with outer function.
- The goal is not to do less but to be more present inside all that one does.
- Reflective Exercise and Next Steps
- Lillian invites listeners to consider: “When was the last time you wanted something that had nothing to do with what anyone else needed from you?”
- Acknowledges difficulty in answering as meaningful information (“difficulty is data”).
- Next week’s session will focus on the resistance women feel toward the concept of “survival” and how this resistance can be protective.
